Aluminium in Various Grades for Industrial and Aerospace Applications
Aluminium is the most abundant metallic element in the earth’s crust and is the most widely used non-ferrous metal. It is a lightweight alloy being almost one-third of that of steel, making it an essential alloy for applications where component weight is considered important such as in commercial and military jet engines.
Pure aluminum is quite soft and weak, therefore other elemtens like silicon, copper, titanium, manganese and ferrite are added to aluminium grades to achieve better properties such as chemical stability, tensile properties, hardness.
Aluminum alloys are numbered via the International Alloy Designation System (IADS) by the Aluminium Association (AA) which labels aluminium alloys on basis of their composition and chemical properties. Commonly they are reffered to via this number, e.g. 5XXX, 6XXX or 8XXX.
Alloy Series | Principal Alloying Element |
1XXX | 99.000% minimum Aluminum |
2XXX | Copper |
3XXX | Silicon Plus Copper and/or Magnesium |
4XXX | Silicon |
5XXX | Magnesium |
6XXX | Unused Series |
7XXX | Zinc |
8XXX | Tin |
9XXX | Other Elements |
Furthermore, often an alloy is designated with an annealing heat-treatment, tempering or strain hardening following the initial alloy series to further clarify the post-processing treatment e.g. 6XXX-T6. These treatments are common to generate application-specific desired mechanical properties.
Designation | Meaning of Tempering Designation |
F | As fabricated |
O | Annealed |
H | Strain Hardened |
W | Solution Heat-Treated |
T | Thermally Treated |
