Ferritic, Martensitic, Austenitic, Duplex or Precipitation Steel Grades
Stainless steels are alloys with ferrite (iron) as their main component, with further elements being added to acquire specific properties. Such additional elements include but are not limited to nickel, niobium (columbium), manganese, cobalt amongst others and most noticibly chromium. Furthermore, the carbon percentage in steel is key for hardenability through quenching, generating martensitic and austenitic stainless steels.
The chromium contents of the steel makes a steel “stainless” as chromium-oxides generate a microscopic surfaces layer preventing corrosion from ocurring. Our modern world is built on stainless steels as it has tremendous properties and can be fine-tuned to fit almost any application.
Stainless steel has excellent tensile-strength & yield-strength properties, can often be hardened either through precipitation or through ageing and/or quenching. This makes stainless steel the go-to alloy in our modern world for construction and engineering purposes.
